While I agree not allowing Homosexual marriage is stupid, I don’t think that marriage between cousins is as bad as it used to be. Sure, you’re taking genetic risks, but we don’t outlaw marriage between couples with Downs’ do we? What about other disabilities that are unavoidably hereditary and detrimental to the quality of life of their offspring?
I happen to know a couple that’s been 30yrs happily married, first cousins, and both of their children went through college and are not disadvantaged by their genes. Disallowing freedom is unethical, but do the needs of the whole matter more than the needs of the individual? In many cultures, that’s a clear yes…
Anyways, just spouting here. If you’re any-sexual and want to get married, we’d be happy to welcome you in Canada!!
Dude! I grew up super close to my first cousins like we were brothers and sisters. I just can’t see how a marriage between 1st cousins is not completely incestuous. Frankly it gives me the heebie jeebies. Then again, I’m sure the fact that I would marry a woman gives people the creeps too. However, the issue people have with 1st cousins marrying has more to do with ethical values than, concerns about genetic abnormalities of their offspring.
With that said, I do believe in freedom for all, within reason of course. It’s frustrating that same sex couples cannot be married, but it wasn’t so long ago that interracial marriages were illegal as well. It takes time unfortunately to see change on a mass scale. I mean look how hard it is for us to change 1 simple habit or idea for ourselves. Now multiply that times infinitum. Just gotta keep moving forward, speaking up, showing up, and sharing truth until we reach a tipping point.
As a person born and raised in Alabama, where marrying cousins is still legal, I can tell you that those “stereotypes” often ring true. Case in point: my best friend from elementary school, with whom I’m still in contact with 30+ years later, was estranged from her SISTER for well over a decade due to a fight over the affections of their first cousin. (Actually, their relationship, while better, is still strained from that event of long ago). Yet they act as if nothing was remotely wrong with the fact that blood sisters would not speak, announce the births of their children and basically ignored each other for over 10 years over some BS like that but who would damn-near pull their hair out by the roots over the idea that lawmakers might possibly make marriage between same sex couples legal!! Meanwhile, those two upstanding examples of love, commitment and MORALS are both on their third marriages and I take no issue pointing out these FACTS when either of them goes on the “God says gays shouldn’t…yada yada, yang yang” crap! It’s amazing how pointing out blatant hypocrisies tends to shut up even the most, err, “less than intelligent” blowhards!!
And people wonder why I always say I’m was raised in Bama but am a citizen of the world!! Pffftt!!! ;-(
Wow… That is sad…
The rampant stupidity in this country is really fucking depressing sometimes.
Absolute bullshit.
